About A/E/C CMOs

Construction marketing should be a growth function.

Too often, it isn’t. In architecture, engineering, and construction companies, marketing can become a collection of disconnected activities: proposals, social posts, sponsorships, websites, events, brochures, and whatever request landed in the inbox that morning. Everyone is busy, but all that activity does not necessarily add up to a stronger company.

A/E/C CMOs exists to change that. We help construction companies build marketing functions that create stronger brands, support profitable growth, and make the company easier to choose.

Not more marketing. Better marketing.

Built for an industry that builds differently.

AEC companies are not SaaS companies. They are not retailers. And they should not be forced into marketing strategies designed for companies that sell something entirely different.

Construction is built on reputation, relationships, expertise, trust, and execution. Buying cycles can last years. One project can be worth millions. A handful of relationships can transform a company, while the wrong clients can consume its people and profit.

The strongest company does not always win the work. The company that is known, trusted, differentiated, and remembered often has the advantage.

That is the kind of brand we want to build: a magnetic one.

Why A/E/C CMOs exists

I created A/E/C CMOs around a simple idea: construction companies deserve senior marketing leadership without having to assemble and manage a collection of agencies, freelancers, software platforms, and disconnected specialists.

The traditional fractional CMO model usually stops at strategy. The CMO develops the plan, joins leadership meetings, and then hands execution to the client’s internal team or a collection of outside vendors.

That never made much sense to me.

If we determine that your positioning needs to change, your website needs to be rebuilt, your SEO needs attention, your content needs improvement, or your sales team needs better tools, you should not have to hire several more firms and spend the next year coordinating them.

A/E/C CMOs is being built differently. Senior marketing leadership is supported by an integrated delivery operation, specialized talent, technology, and AI-enabled systems that help us execute more of the work under one strategy.

That means fewer handoffs, fewer competing agendas, and less time spent managing vendors. It also means strategy and execution can inform each other continuously instead of living in separate organizations.

Your Company Values

Marketing should make the business stronger.

Marketing activity is easy to measure. Marketing maturity is harder.

I care about what is happening underneath the activity. Are you winning more of the right opportunities? Are clients coming back? Are you known for something meaningful? Does the market understand why it should choose you? Can your marketing team support where leadership wants to take the company?

Strong marketing should influence revenue, profitability, hit rate, client retention, recruiting, reputation, and the types of opportunities a company attracts. It should help leadership make better decisions, help business development open the right doors, and help the company compete before the RFP ever arrives.

Those are business conversations, and marketing belongs in them.

Build a brand people are drawn to.

AEC companies talk a lot about differentiation, then describe themselves using almost exactly the same language as their competitors: quality, integrity, relationships, safety, and experience.

Those things matter. They just are not enough to make a company distinct.

A magnetic brand gives people a reason to notice you, remember you, trust you, talk about you, work with you, and come back. It is not about being the loudest firm in the market or having the biggest marketing budget.

Smaller contractors can out-position Goliaths. Regional firms can become category authorities. Specialty contractors can become indispensable partners. Companies that have grown almost entirely through referrals can turn a strong reputation into a more deliberate and dependable growth engine.

The goal is not to manufacture a personality. It is to uncover what makes the company valuable, sharpen it, and make that value difficult to miss.

I’ve spent my career inside this industry.

I’m Perryn Olson, founder of A/E/C CMOs. I’ve spent more than two decades working in construction marketing, helping AEC companies think differently about their brands, marketing organizations, business development, and growth.

I hold the FSMPS, CPSM, and CCMP credentials, and my career has included marketing leadership, consulting, research, writing, speaking, and publishing. That experience has given me a front-row seat to the same problems repeating themselves across the industry.

Talented marketing coordinators are asked to create strategy they have never been taught to develop. Marketing directors get trapped in production instead of leading. Executives struggle to understand what marketing should own. Companies hire agencies to solve isolated problems without anyone connecting the pieces. And firms spend enormous amounts of money looking and sounding remarkably similar to everyone else.

I believe construction companies can do better, so I built A/E/C CMOs around the kind of marketing leadership and support I believe more of them should have access to.

A/E/C Marketing Experience

A smarter way to deliver marketing.

A/E/C CMOs is designed to operate more like an embedded marketing function than a traditional consultant or agency. Leadership, strategy, execution, research, technology, and automation work together rather than being passed from vendor to vendor.

That gives us room to use the right combination of people and tools for the problem in front of us. Some challenges require senior strategic judgment. Others need writing, design, development, SEO, research, systems thinking, or consistent execution. Increasingly, some work can be accelerated by AI agents and purpose-built tools without lowering the quality of the thinking behind it.

The point is not technology for technology’s sake. The point is to remove unnecessary friction so more time and money can go toward work that creates value.

We intend to contribute to the industry, too.

Consulting is only part of the vision for A/E/C CMOs. We will produce original research, practical resources, books, frameworks, and tools designed specifically for construction marketers and executives.

Our industry needs more than recycled marketing advice. We need better benchmarks, better questions, better data, and occasionally someone willing to challenge assumptions that have become accepted simply because “that’s how construction has always done it.”

Our work will explore areas such as brand distinction, marketing maturity, search visibility, expertise, authority, and the factors that make some AEC brands more memorable and valuable than others.

The goal is not to guard what we know.

It is to make the industry smarter.

As Seen On

Build something worth choosing.

Your company already has a brand. The question is whether that brand is helping you get where you want to go.

If you’re trying to grow, improve profitability, attract better-fit clients, strengthen your reputation, professionalize marketing, or simply figure out what marketing should be doing next, that’s where we come in.

Let’s build something.
